All about this Pest Control Course

Our pest control course will give you a detailed insight into what a pest is, the types of pests, how to identify signs of pests and the types of pest control.

You will explore the five main stages of pest control, which are avoid, block, detect, respond and recover. You will also look at some dos and don’ts of pest control. You will also consider some of the implications of having pests in and around food businesses.

You will then look at some control options for each type of pest and how businesses can help in prevention and also consider who can carry out pest control and how to choose a contractor.

Please note: This course does not qualify a person to use pest control products, such as rat and mice poisons, and those identified as ‘professional use’. It is an awareness level course on how to identify common pests, reduce the risk of infestations, and some actions to take if there is a pest problem.

In order to complete the course, you must achieve 80% or more in the final multiple choice quiz.

You will earn 3 CPD points on completion of the course, this course will take around 3 hours to complete and the certificate will last for two years.

Units covered

  • Unit 1 – Introduction to Pest Control – In the first unit you will be introduced to pest control and look at what a pest is and some definitions. You will explore some examples of legislation and standards relating to pests, including enforcement if food businesses fail to comply, you will finish the unit by looking at some case studies of prosecutions relating to pests.
  • Unit 2 – Roles, responsibilities and implications – In this unit you will explore roles and responsibilities when it comes to pest prevention, management and control. You will explore the five main stages of pest control and the importance of good house keeping and what action to take if you do see a pest on or around the premises.
  • Unit 3 – The different types of pests – In this unit you will consider the different types of pests in and around food premises, you will look at examples of pests and why they can be a problem for food businesses. You will also consider some ways of identifying pests, including spotting the signs of an infestation.
  • Unit 4 – Types of pest control – In the final unit of the pest control course, you will be introduced to the different types of pest control to prevent, exterminate, deter and remove pests. You will also consider how businesses can prevent pests and some examples of good food safety and hygiene practices. Finally, you will consider which pest control methods to choose and why.
